ROPE THERAPY

About Rope Therapy

Rope & Belt Therapy is a unique yoga-based treatment developed by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar in the 1970s and later refined by Dr. Shrikant Karandikar in 1995. It involves the use of ropes and belts to support the body during specific yogic postures, making the practice safer and more effective—especially for those with joint or spine problems.

This therapy is especially helpful in the early stages of joint and spine conditions like:

  • Osteoarthritis of the knee

  • Lumbar spondylosis (lower back issues)

  • Cervical spondylosis (neck problems)

The ropes and belts help align the body properly, reduce pressure on joints, and provide support during stretches, allowing patients to perform yoga poses comfortably and without strain.

But this therapy is more than just physical support. It also includes breathing techniques (pranayama) from the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, which help activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the system that calms the body and reduces stress.

People with joint or muscle pain often have a low stress threshold, meaning stress can make their condition worse. By combining physical support with deep breathing, this therapy helps improve the body’s stress response, reduce pain, and promote healing.

Benefits of Rope & Belt Therapy:

  • Eases pressure on joints and supports body alignment

  • Relieves back, knee, and neck pain

  • Improves posture and flexibility safely

  • Helps manage stress and anxiety through breath control

  • Supports recovery from musculoskeletal disorders

Rope & Belt Therapy is a great example of how traditional yoga can be adapted with modern tools to help people manage pain, improve mobility, and feel more balanced—both physically and mentally.
